One year on from celebrating a new stained glass window in honour of Arnold Spencer-Smith, Dunedin’s All Saints Church will mark the 109th anniversary of his death this weekend.
Spencer-Smith was padre and photographer for the Ross Sea Party of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition.
He died on the Ross Ice Shelf in March 1916.
The anniversary will be marked this Saturday with a commemoration programme.
It will begin at 5.30pm with Mass using Spencer-Smith’s chalice and paten, followed by a reception at 6.30pm in the All Saint’s Church hall.
The event will also feature the 7th annual Spencer-Smith lecture, presented at 7pm by Royal Geographic Society Fellow Susana Ferrar, on "Paths are made by walking".
