Tight pairs contest as interclub returns

Indoor bowls

Dave Stewart and Alistair Coles won the South Canterbury Indoor Bowls open pairs held on Saturday.

They won on a countback from Derek and Carolyn Cooper, and Allan Gibson and Neisha Hogg, with these three combinations having had three wins and a draw.

The Stewart skippered pair won by .5 of an end, having won 24.5 ends, 39 points.

In second place were the Coopers with 24 ends and 53 points, and the third-placed Gibson skippered pair had 21.5 ends, 39 points.

Roydon Wood and Catherine Hickey finished fourth with three wins.

This Saturday our one to five year bowlers are in Oamaru contesting the Eastern Zone tournament in singles and pairs.

The winners will contest the national finals of these events as part of super finals weekend to be held in Wellington from August 16 to 18.

On Saturday Pareora/Southburn and RSA clubs are holding their annual tournament in Timaru.

It is with sadness in our hearts that we have learned of the passing of Ivan Pooke, a past patron of the association.

He was the person who discovered the Redruth site which was up for purchase and it became the Timaru Association’s first land and building purchase.

Interclub returns next week (June 26) and the SC Championship pairs are on Saturday, June 29, incorporating the Brian Henry Cup for the best performed local husband and wife team.
