Two local players to represent S. Island

Indoor bowls

Two South Canterbury players have been named in the South Island team to play the North Island on Saturday, August 3, in Thames.

Jenelle Lockyer will play in the women’s singles and Debs Ruffell will be the lead in the women’s triples. Congratulations to both these players and I am certain they will be worthy representatives for our district.

On Saturday our 1-5 year players competed in the Eastern Zone playoffs in singles and pairs.

John Dawson and Kevin Fahey both qualified in the singles before being eliminated in the quarterfinals.

In the pairs, only Kevin Fahey qualified, finishing runner-up with Alex McLeod, of Allenton. Gemma Andrew, of Ashburton, won the singles and led for Nic Andrew to win the pairs. Most of the feedback has been that the events need to be split and played over two days.

The Pareora-Southburn and SC RSA clubs tournament had five teams with three wins and a countback was required to decide the placegetters.

The eventual winners were Derek Cooper, Hayden Harnett and Kelvin Lockyer with 25 ends and 43 points. Their only loss was to the runners-up team of Diane Warwood, Barry O’Connor and Merv Shand with 24 ends and 40 points. For Shand, this is a continuation of his good form, while O’Connor is a very underrated bowler.

Third were Allan Gibson, Christine Shand and Alan Sullivan with 21 ends and 38 points, fourth were Lyn Brown, Lex Gibson and Sheryl Smith (19 ends and 39 points) and fifth were Roydon Wood, Colin Wood and John Evans (18 ends, 28 points).

This Saturday is the South Canterbury Championship pairs, which incorporates the Brian Henry Trophy for the best-performed husband and wife.

The following weekend North Otago are hosting the Eastern Zone finals, which are now going to be held at their centre headquarters. The proposed programme is Saturday, July 6: 9am pairs, 1pm mixed fours; and Sunday, July 7: 9am singles, 1pm masters fours. It is envisaged to have an hour break between events.

On Saturday, July 6 there is an open triples in Timaru.
