New Zealand band Ardijah are set to showcase their "Poly Fonk" sounds at this year’s Matariki Mackenzie festival in Takapō (Tekapo).
Te Rūnanga o Arowhenua is thrilled to host this year’s festival and excited to expand the offering from previous years with an inaugural evening concert.
Te Upoko o Waihao, Te Wera King said this year’s event was set to be an even bigger and brighter celebration of whānau and whenua.
"We’re hoping to see international travellers and whānau from all over the region connect with us through culture, kai and kōrero during the Matariki public holiday."
Mr King said he could not imagine anywhere better to celebrate the rise of Matariki.
"Takapō lies at the foot of Aoraki and is home to the country’s largest dark sky reserve, a perfect vantage point to bring in the new year.
"We’re particularly excited to have these amazing bands travelling to Takapō and our hope is that on the evening of the public holiday, everyone in the area will be celebrating on the lakefront with us."
Playing alongside Ardijah at the evening concert will be well-known Christchurch reggae-roots group 1 Drop Nation and upcoming artist Hone. The concert is R13 and alcohol free. Ticket prices range from $25 to $50 (excluding fees).
During the day, guests can enjoy a variety of free activities, including workshops, live music, a wearable art competition, guest speakers and guided walks along the lakefront. People are encouraged to book their places early for daytime events as space is limited.
Matariki Mackenzie starts at 10am on Friday, June 28, pausing briefly at 3.30pm, before the evening concert and night market begin at 5pm. The event finishes at 10pm.
