Jessica Todd (Combat Sports) was in dominant form and won three gold medals at the South Island wrestling championships at Mosgiel at the weekend.

Todd (16), a pupil at Columba College, proved her ability by winning medals in three different weight categories - 65kg class, 67kg class and 72kg class.

She was the most successful female wrestler at the championships and won the trophy for being the best female fighter.

Todd, the New Zealand champion in her age group, has been wrestling since the age of 8 and has won several national titles.

Her most significant performance was to win a gold medal in the girls under-16 63kg class at the Down Under Games on the Gold Coast last September.

Wrestlers from the United States, Australia and New Zealand participated in the event.

The South Island championships were dominated by the 28 wrestlers from Dunedin's Combat Sports School who won 29 medals - 11 gold, 11 silver and 7 bronze.

Welsford also won the junior and senior titles in the Greco-Roman style in the 60kg class.

His brother, Craig, won the 50kg class in freestyle wrestling.

Bryce Neaves won gold medals in the under 32kg section and the 35kg division in the boys aged 10-13 competition.

The other notable Otago performance at the championships came from Bayfield High School pupil Florian Rades (17), who won the silver medal in the 84kg class in the boys aged 16 and 17 grade.

The bout was won by Riki Swete (South Canterbury).

The four wrestlers going to the Down Under Games from Otago are Florian Rades (Combat Sports) and Taieri's Zac Harrington, Josh Pendreigh and Ricky Welsford.

Todd was selected but declined.
