Otago crews qualify impressively at Maadi Cup regatta

Otago's top secondary school rowers have been in some form at the Maadi Cup this week.

They have made a blistering start to the business end of the renowned secondary schools regatta, with crews qualifying for A finals and semifinals across the grades at Lake Karapiro yesterday.

Among the early highlights, Archie MacDonald and Ollie O’Connell (John McGlashan) and Ike Newlands-Carter and Cash Paterson (Waitaki Boys’) are through to the boys under-18 novice double sculls A final.

Waitaki Boys’ crew of Ned Newlands-Carter, Lachlan Wright, Stuart Isbister, Jett Rogers and George Smith have also qualified for the boys under-18 coxed quad sculls.

The Otago Girls’ crew of Milly Hoeta, Frances Donald, Sienna Nicholson, Ariana Oswald and Ruby Merriman have qualified for the girls under-17 coxed quad sculls A final and Otago Boys’ crew of Leo Garden, Ollie Scott, Tom Collie, Logan Millar and Hunter Ruxton qualified for the boys under-17 coxed quad sculls.

Lucy Earl, Devon Skevington, Charlotte Scott, Isla Peddie and Kate Baskerville (Columba) will line up for the girls under-15 coxed four A final

Reuben Davis, Phineas Thomas, Henri Monnier Baxter Kingan and Jessie Glover (Wakatipu) and McDonald, Archie Gordon, Gus Carr, Artie Sweetman and Cameron Lane (John McGlashan) are through to the boys under-15 coxed quad sculls A final.

Gordon, McDonald, Sweetman, O’Connell and Lane will also line up for the boys under-18 novice coxed quad sculls semifinal.

Columba duo Nova Whiston and Anika Leyser will line up for the girls under-17 coxless pair oars A final.

Otago have also booked their spot in some of the top grade semifinals.

Fenella Millen (Columba), Lucy Clark (Wakatipu) and Georgia Graham (St Hilda’s) are all in the girls under-17 single sculls semifinals.

Clark will also jump in the boat with Amy Paterson and Graham will join Bonnie Turner for the semifinal of the girls under-17 double sculls.

Bella Breen and Ruby Smith, of Dunstan, have also qualified for the semifinal.

Columba rowers Ciara Paterson and Isla Nicholson and Waitaki Girls’ Hanna Strachan and Sophie Spittle will line up for the girls under-18 coxless pair oars.

Dunstan quad Emer Bryant, Niamh O’Docherty, Ellie King, Drew Thomas and Milla Okane and Otago Girls’ quad Liesel Tolson, Kate Merriman, Sienna Nicholson, Ariana Oswald and Ruby Merriman will race in the girls under-18 coxed quad sculls semifinal.

Max Smith and Jelte Stuke (Dunstan), Andre Adams and Nicholas Thom (Otago Boys’), Wright and Ned Newlands-Cater (Waitaki Boys’) and Ben Thompson and Henry Lucas (Otago Boys’) are in the boys under-18 double sculls semifinal.
