Shaw poised for comeback in Otago masters team

The return of Ken Shaw is the feature of the Otago  masters  (over-40)  men’s  golf team  to compete in the national Freyberg Rosebowl tournament at Whitford Park in Auckland in November.

Shaw (54) has played in the event on eight previous occasions as well as being selected in 2009, but was forced to withdraw after he tripped while chasing his trolley, suffering a shoulder injury.

He has played 59 games for Otago in the event, winning seven and halving one of his eight games on debut in 2003 and was named player of the tournament.

His best performance was two years later when he won all eight games on the Muriwai course.

But in  2011 he  sustained  severe injuries  when his vehicle’s hand brake failed, crushing him up against a wall.

Shaw had seven months off work and almost a year away from playing golf which put representative golf on hold.

He became the club captain at the Taieri Lakes course two years ago and his administrative duties took over most of his time.

Earlier this year, Shaw decided to get back into competitive golf and decided to trial for the Masters team once again.

When his home club, Taieri Lakes, failed to enter a team in the senior A metropolitan pennant series this year, Shaw joined Island Park in search of some serious matchplay golf.

He showed he was back to his best in the South Island interprovincial masters tournament last weekend, winning all three games at No6.

The Otago team will be captained by No1 Andrew Hobbs but Shaw will play at No4 and will be manager of the team.
