Physed A powered to a 76-43 win over Southern Magpies in the opening round of the Dunedin premier competition on Saturday.

Physed led 23-10 at the first break, and a strong start to the second quarter helped them open up a 17-goal advantage by halftime.

Abby Urlich dominated the shooting circle, landing 56 of her 62 attempts at goal to run at 90%.

Physed’s midcourt combination Gemma Rowcroft (WA) and Millie Hassall (C) were on point with their feeds into their shooters, ensuring any turnovers were converted.

Physed extended their advantage to 59-32 at the three-quarter break.

Southern were desperately trying to close the gap, and their defenders were doing everything they could to prevent Urlich from scoring.

Goal shoot Freya Wilson shot 88% for Southern but it was not enough to close the gap.

After last season’s finals, St Hilda’s and Columba College were relegated to premier 2, resulting in a different look for the premier 1 grade.

Instead of eight teams, there are now six, and for the start of the season, there are no high school teams in premier 1.

In the season opener, College A and University-Albion B had a very close game, University-Albion B winning 54-49.

It was more clear-cut in the other game with University-Albion A dominating Physed B 81-36.

Next week, Physed A play College A, University-Albion A play Southern Magpies and Physed B play University-Albion B.
