On Saturday, the DIY skatepark in Fryatt St was the site of a "skate jam," where skaters showed off their best tricks.
Skaters of all ages and all abilities could be seen enjoying the day.
Dunedin Skateboarding Association committee member Dr Olivier Jutel said it was a spot where young people, beginners, and all types of skate communities come and "just sort of vibe".
"That’s what skating is about, really."
The skate jam was held to raise money for materials to add to the DIY.
"We just accumulate junk ... like bricks, and backfill, and the council’s donated us a bunch of the shapes from George St."
The DIY skatepark is situated on the side of the Fryatt St wharf, which Dr Jutel said provided a "mindful escape".
"It’s a space ... to just sort of, like, just think about your tricks and hang out," he said.
When asbestos-ridden structures on the Fryatt St wharf were torn down, various plans were made to fill the space.
However, it continued to sit vacant.
Eventually, through some sweet-talking, hard work and a lot of initiative from the local skating community, the DIY skatepark was made.
