Clenched teeth and white knuckles were the order of the day in a rip-roaring Footballsouth Premier League match at Memorial Park on Saturday.

The 2-2 result had Mosgiel and Roslyn-Wakari perched on a knife edge as committed tackling kept the stakes high between both unbeaten teams.

The match was saturated with drama, as referee Allan Martin issued each team a red card. There was also a nervous penalty, and a spectacular own goal.

Roslyn took a 1-0 lead after 33 minutes, when Sam Mepham robbed Matt Brook, then hammered a sizzling shot past Mosgiel keeper James Andrew.

Mosgiel's shares dipped further when defender Mike Abbott launched a crude tackle that studded into Brad Johnston's chest. Referee Martin flashed an immediate red, and not for the first time in his chequered career, volatile Abbott headed for an early shower.

Roslyn pressure created panic in the Mosgiel goal area, and Johnstone gained revenge as he crashed in a goal for what looked like a comfortable 2-0 scoreline.

But 10-man Mosgiel opened up Roslyn's defence, and a push in the penalty box had Martin pointing to the spot. Jordan Swaney gave keeper Peter Evans no chance and the score was 2-1 at halftime.

The match restarted with Roslyn's Tim Mather heading an attempted clearance into his own net to make it 2-2. Then more drama as Martin red-carded Roslyn's Ajay Cunningham for a high boot.

Coaches Mike McGarry (Mosgiel) and Colin Thom (Roslyn) praised their teams' respective efforts, but they effectively lost two points each in the championship race.

Dunedin Technical obviously enjoyed the artificial surface at ILT Football Turf in Invercargill, where Mike Fridge's side cemented its place at the top of the FPL with a convincing 7-1 win.

After 22 goals scored in three games, Technical is setting a hot pace, but it was Darren Overton's two goals in Caversham's 6-0 demolition of Northern that elevated the midfielder to top goal-scorer with five goals.

After conceding 11 goals last week, Queenstown Rovers raised a few eyebrows by beating University 1-0 at the Caledonian Ground. Daniel Martin got the only goal.

Another solo effort earned Grants Braes its first points when Joh Mpondo scored to keep Green Island firmly rooted at the foot of the FPL.
