Football: League leaders leave others well behind

The top two Football South Premier League teams stretched their lead on Saturday as Caversham and Dunedin Technical battered opposition defences with a fusillade of goals.

Caversham rammed in 10 goals at Mosgiel, and Dunedin Technical hit Roslyn Wakari's net six times at Ellis Park.

In mid table, Green Island hit three goals against University.

Excuses abound in losing sides, with teams claiming injuries, absenteeism and some players choosing to take holidays at this time, but the FPL leaders do not seem to be affected.

With a new chief executive in the process of being appointed after Bill Chisholm's retirement, perhaps the time is ripe to revisit greater contact with Canterbury, to expand the challenges for top teams in Dunedin.

Dunedin Technical will at least face new opposition in its home Chatham Cup tie against Mangere on August 7-8.

The summer national league preparations will start in September, and again the gap between local football and national league could be a jump too far, as coach Mike Fridge starts to assemble available talent.

The Caversham club also leads the two divisions below premier with margins of 10 points and 13 points, suggesting there is more depth at Tonga Park than elsewhere.

Coach Tim Horner's side predictably also leads in the golden boot race. Tom and Lewis Jackson both scored hat tricks against Mosgiel, taking Tom to 22 goals and Lewis 13.

Tom Jackson has played in only nine of Caversham's games, giving an average scoring rate of 2.4 goals per game.

Mosgiel's early title ambitions have been redrafted to settle for ''as high a finish as possible'' in the words of coach Andrew Brook, who reckons Mosgiel, when his full side is available, can compete with any team in the league.

A similar story applies at Ellis Park, where Roslyn Wakari conceded a goal after three minutes.

Technical, like Caversham, has an effective aerial attack, and on Saturday it was a firm header by Josh Stewart from a set piece that opened the scoring.

Free kicks and corners continued to plague Roslyn, and steady scoring continued through Andrew Douglas (15th minute), John Curwan (33rd) and Alistair Rickerby (40th).

Curwan scored again in the 66th minute, and to add salt to Roslyn's wounds, the home side conceded an own goal.

Technical coach Nick Cooper was pleased that the team's run of 14 consecutive wins remained intact, and named his player of the day as the hard working Taylor McCormack.

Green Island's performance produced a beaming smile from Malcolm Fleming, whose young team stuck to its task and, with two games in hand, looks capable of leapfrogging into third place.

Connor Neil opened the scoring against Varsity in the 34th minute, fed by a quality cross from Rob Cox. Provider Cox himself scored the Island's second goal, and in the second half, Sean McIntee wrapped up the final 3-1 result.
