The siren was blaring for more than 10 minutes and people blocked their ears as it wailed.
A police spokesman said the vehicle was one of their electric vehicles and it was not known what caused the malfunctioning siren.
The electric vehicle was added to the Dunedin police fleet in early September last year and was the first of its kind to be unveiled in the city.
"The vehicle’s now in the custody of a mechanic," the spokesman said.
