Football: Caversham and Technical draw 1-1

Dunedin Technical and Caversham ground out a 1-1 stalemate in the penultimate round of the Footballsouth Premier League at the Caledonian Ground on Saturday.

Caversham started the stronger of the two teams, maintaining possession and building attacking pressure with good ball movement.

Technical, as it has done on many occasions this season, was happy to absorb the pressure in the early stages, and move into higher gears as the match progressed.

The game fired up in the 62nd minute, when a long Caversham defensive clearance was poorly controlled by Technical defender Tristan Prattley, allowing Caversham striker Ant Hancock to take possession just outside the box.

Hancock calmly rounded a Technical defender and unleashed a searing left-foot shot into the corner of the goal for Caversham to take the lead.

The tempo of the match rose considerably and Technical claimed the equaliser 10 minutes later, when a cross into the Caversham penalty area was not properly cleared. The ball sat up for Michael Flaws to volley home from 10m.

In other matches, University claimed a top-five position with a 1-0 win over Northern at Bayfield Park, the students' 10th win of season. Brazilian dangerman Gui Melo scored the winner.

The annual Chinese Charity Cup between Dunedin Technical and University Fletcher Cup teams finished with Technical registering a solid 4-1 victory and locking away the division two silverware with a perfect record of 19 wins from 19 games.
