Just one ODI for cricket fans in Otago

Otago will host an international this summer but fans may feel short-changed when they see the schedule.

The Black Caps will play Bangladesh in a one-day international at the University of Otago Oval on February 20.

It is not exactly the "premium content'' Dunedin Venues would have imagined when it took over running international cricket fixtures in the city.

Chief executive Terry Davies acknowledged that point but said "any international allocation was a good one''.

"I feel OK about it,'' he said.

"We obviously strive for the best content we can possibly get. That is a given.

"But we are in the relationship for the long haul and if you look back over the last few years, we are doing well at what we can do well.

"We delivered a good cricket wicket, we've sold two matches out and, if we continue to do that, I think that bodes well for us.

"But we are in the hands of scheduling and also we've said to NZC that we would prefer matches in February and March each year because it is the best time of year for us.

"When we are making stipulations like that, we have to be happy to get what we get.''

Bangladesh is probably not a fixture which will have cricket fans sprinting between wickets to get to the front of the queue.

Most fans in the deep South would have been crossing their fingers for India, which tours tour here in late January and early February.

India will play five ODIs and three twenty20s and they are all in the North Island, as has been the trend in recent years.

While there might be some long faces in Dunedin, the feeling in Queenstown will be a tad more morose.

The Queenstown Events Centre was overlooked completely despite a recent $640,000 upgrade.

Queenstown Lakes District Council sport and recreation manager Simon Battrick could not be reached for comment.

The venue hosted nine ICC under-19 World Cup games earlier this year but it has not staged a senior international since 2014 when Black Caps batsman Corey Anderson belted a century off 36 balls.

It fell out of favour because of surface and drainage problems which were corrected during the upgrade.

Auckland may feel miffed, as well.

NZC's Indian broadcast partner Star Sports wanted 3pm starts for the five Indian one-day internationals and 8pm starts for the three T20s.

It conceded ground for one Eden Park match - the India T20 against the Black Caps on February 8 - which will start in the traditional 7pm slot. But it means there will be no ODIs at the 40,000-seat stadium because of resource consent restrictions.
