The Milton King Crabs kept their stranglehold on top spot in the South Otago club competition with a one-wicket win over the Clutha Comets in Balclutha on Saturday.

Clutha opted to bat and could only muster 119 all out.

A solid opening stand between Jared Willocks and Macleod Glaister got the home side off to a positive start before Milton started to take charge through the middle overs.

Led by skipper Ben Cameron, the King Crabs were able to restrict runs off the bat, although extras were an issue throughout the course of the innings.

Cameron finished with four wickets and an impressive closing spell from Jacob Jenkins helped him take three for eight off three overs.

In reply, Clutha took early wickets and looked as if they had broken the back of the Milton chase.

However, Cameron had other ideas as he constructed a match-winning knock while watching his partners fall at the other end. Cameron was unbeaten on 32 when the winning run was hit with plenty of time to spare.

Dante Macvey had a strong outing for Clutha with a career-best 16 with the bat and three wickets in the second innings.

The Owaka Bandits, also unbeaten in this competition, continued their form with a five-wicket win over the Kings in Kaitangata.

Kai could only muster 119 runs from 35 overs, despite a positive opening stand between Orry Young and Allan Thomson that had the home side in a decent position at 53 for one at drinks.

Owaka’s bowlers took control in the second half of the innings. A four-wicket haul from Hayden Sheppard and a wonder catch from Will Clark on the boundary were highlights of the innings.

In reply, the Kings had Owaka in all sorts of trouble at 13 for three after nine overs.

Opening batter Gordon Edwards (50) and Will Clark (22) added 69 for the fourth wicket to break the back of the chase, and a late cameo from Francis Parker (22) got Owaka home with four overs to spare.

Kings captain Kobe Thomson finished with impressive figures of four for 15.

The Waihola Swans are also unbeaten after two matches as they beat the Valley Stingers by nine wickets in Milton courtesy of the DLS method.

Valley recorded 158 all out, with skipper Lachlan Johnston the shining light with 49 runs.

Tight bowling by the Swans forced Valley to play loosely and they paid the price at crucial times. Jared Cunningham was the pick of the Waihola bowlers with two for 16.

In reply, the Swans were cruising at 99 for one at drinks when the players deemed the pitch too dangerous to play on and the match was abandoned.

Waihola skipper Dylan Bungard was unbeaten on 50 as his side were awarded four crucial competition points.
