Woman clocked 50kmh over speed limit

A woman caught driving 50kmh over the speed limit in South Dunedin admitted she was trying to race the car next to her, police say.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were conducting speed enforcement on Caversham Valley Rd (the Southern Motorway) about 9.50pm on Saturday.

A vehicle driven by a 21-year-old woman was clocked doing 130kmh in an 80kmh zone.

When spoken to, the woman said she was trying to race the car next to her, Snr Sgt Bond said.

Her licence was suspended for 28 days, her car was impounded for unlawful street racing and she was summonsed to appear in court.

Meanwhile, another woman was caught allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol in St Clair after cutting in front of another vehicle - right in front of a police car.

Snr Sgt Bond said police were called to the Esplanade area at 10.45pm yesterday.

A 31-year-old woman had been driving the wrong way out of the Esplanade, towards Forbury Rd.

Officers in a passing patrol car saw her cut off another vehicle as she was coming out on to the roundabout.

They stopped her in nearby Albert St and she recorded a breath alcohol content of 723mcg.

Her licence was suspended for 28 days and she was summonsed to appear in court.
