Horne Creek ducks and oh-so-cute ducklings need to give way this Sunday in the interests of charity.

That’s because the Rotary Club of Queenstown is running its annual duck race from the Village Green to the Queenstown Bay outlet.

About 35 corporate ducks, bought for $280 a pop by businesses who’ve then fancifully dressed them, take off at 3pm.

That’s followed at about 3.30pm by the public race, for which people can buy plastic ducks on the Village Green for $10 a head.

This race will include 16 ducks entered by Arrowtown School and Hanley’s Farm’s Te Kura Whakatipu o Kawarau school.

Prizegiving, including best-dressed awards, follows at Beech Tree bar, with prizes generously donated by local businesses.

Rotary’s duck race organiser Tim Wilshire expects about $7000 will be raised for splitting up between Coastguard Queenstown and Lakes District Air Rescue Trust.

It’s rumoured one corporate duck will be dressed as a dog complete with ears cut out from a tea towel.
