More than 600 cars will be on display as a popular Central Otago car show returns to the Alpha St recreation ground today.

The Cromwell Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival, organised by the Southland Ford Falcon Club, has been run annually for more than 30 years and attracts visitors from all over New Zealand.

Club president Alistair Henderson said they expected there would be 600 cars, motorbikes and other vehicles on display and a good crowd to view them.

"There’s usually a few thousand [people]."

However, organisers were aware numbers might be impacted by a concert being held in Gibbston Valley the same day.

The support of the Central Otago community and sponsors had been amazing, he said.

There would be so much variety among the cars on display he found it hard to single out a car of interest.

"You name it, we have it."

A car powered by an aircraft engine was on display last year, he said.

As well as the display today, there was a car cruise night, organised by Alpine Street Machines, which would also host a swap meet with the Central Otago Vintage Car Club tomorrow.
