Liger Leadership Academy students Joel van Beers and Nikau Barnes, both 15, are just over half-way through an epic summer adventure, during which they plan to travel 250km, circumnavigating Lake Whakatipu.
They set off from Queenstown’s Memorial Arch on Friday and walked to Kingston by Monday, going via Wye Saddle, on the Remarkables, and Devil’s Staircase Point, before kayaking to Halfway Bay on Tuesday.
They expect to be at Walter Peak by the end of today, walking via Refuge Point, and then head to Kinloch, via the Greenstone, over the next two days.
From there, they’ll kayak to Glenorchy, hike to Bennett’s Bluff, make their way to Moke Lake and finally head back to Queenstown.
To date, they’ve raised $2110 for the Whakatipu Reforestation Trust, surpassing their $2000 target. For updates on their journey, see their Instagram page — @inthe-outdoors — or to donate, visit tinyurl.com/4s7rsnct
