The scent of thyme mingled with the reek of burning rubber at the Alexandra airport yesterday.

Several thousand spectators turned up to watch 73 vehicles use the airport runway to clock up their fastest time in the quarter-mile distance in Thunder Sunday drag racing.

Southern Dragways president Neil Allan, of Invercargill, said the festival Sunday drags had "become a ritual" for many drivers.

Vehicles ranged from dedicated race cars to street cars.

The annual festival garden tours also proved popular yesterday, as hundreds of people visited 10 gardens in and around Alexandra and Clyde and watched cooking demonstrations by chef Nici Wickes.

The garden tours are on again today.
