Urgent repairs to the Clyde Bridge will alleviate noise issues caused by previous work on the bridge, Central Otago District Council roading manager Murray Hasler says.

The council announced yesterday that urgent repairs were needed on the bridge and it would be closed from 9am to 3pm on Monday and possibly  again on Wednesday for the repairs to be done.

Mr Hasler later clarified the repairs were to joints on the bridge.

Covers on the joints of the bridge were replaced several months ago and the bridge’s deck resurfaced.

But since then, residents of houses overlooking the bridge had reported "an increased level of noise" when vehicles crossed it, Mr Hasler said.

The council had investigated where the noise was coming from and, although it had been "hard to pinpoint" and taken some time to work out, it was concluded last week the noise was coming from cracked welds that had been covered up by the new joint covers, Mr Hasler said.

Interim repairs on the cracked welds would be done next week, he said.

Long-term, the joints would be replaced with rubber joints, hopefully within about eight weeks.

There were no safety issues from the cracked welds or joint covers, Mr Hasler said.

The bridge will be closed on September 4 from 9am to 3pm, during which time a traffic diversion over the Clyde Dam will be in place.

Should additional time be required or if bad weather caused issues, the bridge would be closed again on September 6, when another diversion would be implemented, Mr Hasler said.
