The Central Otago District Council Tree Policy 2022 was approved by council on Wednesday without triggering any of the emotive responses often seen when tree issues arise.

Planning and strategy parks officer Nikki Aaron reported that the policy had a renewal date of February 2022 and had now been reviewed, with only minor amendments. Those included the addition of the Wilding Conifer Control Policy and the proposed Open Spaces and Recreation Policy.

A 2025 date had been added for the next review of the policy.

Cr Lynley Claridge asked if the policy needed to go hand in hand with reserve management plans.

Parks and recreation manager Gordon Bailey said the review did dovetail with resource management plans.

Mrs Claridge said she was thinking about the Half Mile Reserve and if it would have a resource management plan.

The reserve has been a subject of dissent among people for and against wilding conifer removal there.

Planning and environment executive manager Louise van der Voort said quite a few reserves do not have management plans or have very old plans.

"We would have to not have a tree policy because we are waiting for reserve management plans," she said.

The recommendation to adopt the tree policy was passed unanimously.
