The first Central Otago Judo Championship was held in Cromwell over the weekend.

The event was hosted at Kman Martial Arts Club and comprised 45 fights contested among clubs from Alexandra, Christchurch and Queenstown.

It came after the first Central Otago Martial Arts Championship, which was also hosted in Cromwell this month.

Kman McEvoy of Cromwell was the championship organiser and head instructor at Kman Martial Arts.

He hoped to make the championship an annual event, with Cromwell hosting judo clubs from around the country.

Competitors from ages 4-45 took part.

Kman Martial Arts Club won eight out of the 14 divisions, but no club left empty-handed, as trophies were won by all participating clubs.

Judo is not something you win or lose, McEvoy said.

"In judo, you only win or you learn."

McEvoy said judo was an amazing martial art and was one of the oldest Japanese martial arts represented at the Olympics.

“It is a great activity where parents and their children can train and compete together as a family.”

The championship attracted a large crowd of spectators made up of family, friends and supporters.

"I am so grateful to all the competitors, instructors and referees who supported and helped in making this championship happen” McEvoy said.
