Freedom camping census

The Dunedin City Council will undertake a freedom camping "census" this month.

Council business development adviser Sophie Barker said the survey would help the council develop a bylaw allowing a partial lifting of the freedom camping ban, at selected sites in Dunedin, in time for the Rugby World Cup.

The council planned consulting the public on the proposal next month.

It was necessary to update the council's policy to coincide with government law introducing instant fines to deal with nuisance freedom camping.

In the governance support officer's report to tomorrow's Otago Peninsula Community Board meeting, community board members are asked to provide volunteers to carry out the census, and to suggest locations.

The 2006 freedom camping survey will identify sites.

Volunteers will survey them on Saturday, March 12, between 9pm and 11pm, and on Sunday, March 13, between 6am and 8am.

"This would involve driving to the identified hotspots, noting the types of vehicles present and what sort of environmental impact was left."
