Claim Bill signs a help

The new Freedom Camping Bill and signs are doing their job, the Queenstown Lakes District Council says, citing decreases in freedom campers in non-self-contained vehicles.

Community services general manager Paul Wilson told the community services committee this week officers were "seeing a lot fewer freedom campers in the no-freedom-camping zones and people in self-contained campers [were] using these areas".

Mr Wilson said 150 infringement notices - worth a total of $30,000 - had been issued since local enforcement of $200 spot fines began on September 16.

Cr Cath Gilmour said "word of mouth" was also working effectively and the figures backed it up - just over 102 of the infringement notices received were in the first month.

The Wanaka-Albert Town area still needed addressing, Cr Jude Battson said. A lot of excrement was evident "on the side of the road in the bush", which was "just a shame".
