Signs directing visitors to the world's steepest street still stand at the bottom of Baldwin St, two weeks after Ffordd Pen Llech, in the North Wales town of Harlech, was officially awarded the title.
The Dunedin City Council is still deciding the best way to handle the change in status.
In a statement, a spokesman said the council was talking to businesses and the street's residents about the change in status and asking for their feedback on what to do next.
A range of options and possibilities would be discussed with those groups and Mayor Dave Cull and once feedback had been gathered councillors would be given the chance to decide on a replacement title, he said.
People would still visit the street and the council would continue to plan for that, he said.
But if a bid to reinstate Baldwin St as the world's steepest was successful the signs could stay.
Dunedin surveyor Toby Stoff has said the measurements used on Ffordd Pen Llech went against good surveying practice.
Earlier this week the Clark Fortune McDonald Dunedin branch manager and his colleague Dylan Hills started the process of taking an exact measurement of Baldwin St and a the next step is for it to be digitally scanned.
Mr Stoff also wrote to Guinness World Records highlighting how measuring the street on the inside instead of the centre line gave the Welsh bid an unfair advantage and received a two-line email in response.
They thanked him for the points he had raised and provided a link to where he could read the details of how the record had been decided.
"I got the great fobbing off of 2019, which I fully expected. The guys in Harlech seem charming as hell and for Guinness it's probably a popular choice."
But the response had left him more motivated than ever.
"Now we're going to have to start doing all the boring stuff - that means emailing people and getting the support from the professionals and authorities."
Mr Stoff also has a message for the council.
"Under no circumstances should those signs be touched. Leave them up - show Guinness you mean business - and that might prod them to have a look at what we're saying."
The council spokesman said the council was aware of the remeasurement and supported Mr Stoff's efforts.

Dear Mayor, leave those signs alone & stop wasting time on huis.
I got almost the exact same response from Guinness, they almost completely ignored my question basically. Very disappointing and i'll be sure to never buy one of their books ever again.
