Tūhura Otago Museum has taken over the Dunedin signs on the Northern and Southern Motorways to encourage visitors to the city to visit the "Lego Relics: A New World Rises" exhibition, which officially opens on Saturday.

Those worried that the coloured lettering will be permanent will be glad to learn they are just covered temporarily with coloured vinyl, which will be peeled off early next year.

Museum marketing manager Charlie Buchan said the Dunedin City Council supported the move, because during summer, the city "emptied out a bit" and it was a good "activation" for tourists coming to the city.
