As the month of communal wellbeing and caring that is Ramadan returns in a few days, a local society is aiming to provide an interactive experience that helps all to understand more about the essence of this important observation.

Ramadan is a time of fasting, reflection and spiritual renewal observed by Muslims across the globe.

As well as abstaining from food and drink from dawn to dusk, Ramadan is a time when Muslims deepen their connection with their faith, seek spiritual growth and extend kindness to others.

This year, the Dunedin Pakistan Society aims to help foster understanding and appreciation of Ramadan by establishing an interactive stall inside the Golden Centre Mall.

Society chairwoman Ayesha Qureshi said throughout the month of Ramadan, the mall would feature decorations, including crescent moons and lanterns that symbolised the light, guidance and unity that Ramadan brought.

During weekends, volunteers would be present at a stall where people would be able to learn more about Ramadan.

Goodie bags filled with treats as well as information would be given away, Dr Qureshi said.

"For Muslims, Ramadan is more than just abstaining from food and drink from dawn to dusk — it is a journey of self-discipline, gratitude and empathy.

"It is a time to deepen one’s connection with faith, seek spiritual growth and extend kindness to others."

The principles of charity and social responsibility took centre stage during that holy month, as acts of giving, donations and community service became paramount, she said.

Zakat (obligatory charity) and Sadaqah (voluntary charity) played a crucial role in ensuring that those in need received support, reinforcing the message that no-one in society should be left behind.

The Dunedin Pakistan Society was grateful to the Otago Community Trust, which supported the initiative, Dr Qureshi said.
