Based on Jane Austen’s 1814 novel, the Mansfield Park opera brings the world of the Regency era to life, with music by contemporary composer Jonathan Dove and English libretto by Alasdair Middleton.
In a statement, a NZ Opera spokesperson said the production was directed by Rebecca Meltzer, of Waterperry Opera Festival in the United Kingdom, and featured a cast of New Zealand singers.
In the central role of the story’s heroine Fanny Price, Mansfield Park features rising star Michaela Cadwgan (soprano), with seasoned singers including former Dunedin baritone Robert Tucker as Sir Thomas, alto Kristin Darragh as Lady Bertram and soprano Andrea Creighton as Aunt Norris.
NZ Opera favourites Joel Amosa, Joanna Foote, Andrew Grenon, Sarah Mileham and Taylor Wallbank also return, while London-based mezzo-soprano Cecilia Zhang returns home to join the cast.
The story centres on Fanny, poor but pin-sharp and head over heels for her cousin Edmund. While Edmund, training to become a clergyman, is enchanted by their lively new neighbour Mary, her charismatic brother Henry turns his attention to Fanny. But can she trust his intentions?
While Austen’s signature wit shines throughout, Fanny’s understated grace comes to life not only through heartfelt arias and dialogues but also in the powerful eloquence of her silences — a reflection of Georgian decorum.
Carrying the tale is Dove’s score, performed by pianists David Kelly and Soomin Kim — four hands on one piano — in a chamber setting.
NZ Opera’s production of Mansfield Park will be staged on April 5 and 6 at Hanover Hall, as part of the Dunedin Arts Festival. — APL
