A local team will show it is cool to collect for others in need.

The Otago Community Hospice Street Appeal is happening next week on Friday, March 7, across the Otago region, and on March 8 in Dunedin only.

In a statement, Otago Community Hospice chief executive Ginny Green said it was a really important fundraising event for the hospice.

This year, the hospice has some new faces helping "shake the bucket", including Dunedin’s very own local ice hockey team Phoenix Thunder.

Members of the team will be collecting at Dunedin South Woolworths (previously Countdown) on March 8, from 10am until 6pm.

Phoenix Thunder is one of five national ice hockey teams that play in the New Zealand Ice Hockey League.

The team’s first 2025 preseason games are on "home ice": March 14 and 15 at Dunedin Ice Stadium.

Dunedin Ice Hockey Association general manager and Phoenix Thunder player Cole Beckstead said it was a great cause and the team were really happy to help out.

Other local businesses, individuals and organisations will also be raising funds, as well as students from both King’s High School and Columba College.

Every dollar raised stays in the region and helps support Otago people facing terminal illnesses.

Ms Green said the hospice was "super grateful" to the individuals, businesses, teams and organisations who were generously giving their time to help raise funds.

“Without their support, we would not be able to run our street appeal.” —APL
