Dunedin’s LGBTQI+ community will come together to celebrate diversity as Dunedin Pride Month returns next week.

Dunedin Pride treasurer Trak Gray said the theme of the events taking place throughout March was celebrating takatāpui/rainbow people and families in Ōtepoti.

"So as part of that family focus it is quite an all-ages, family-friendly kind of festival."

Most of the events had no age restriction and had been devised to be suitable for the whole family.

"There are some R18 events but overall it is quite an approachable kind of vibe."

Some of the events included a drag show at Dunedin bar Woof! which would feature local performers.

Dungeons and Drag Queens, a popular games night launched last year, was returning.

There was also a poetry night, a makeup club and a queer-friendly church service.

"We are finishing with a big potluck pride night on the very last day," they said.

The volunteer-run organisation partnered with the Dunedin Fringe Festival, also taking place in March.

"As people registered for the Fringe Festival, they have been able to tag their show as a pride show, so that becomes a whole new category of pride shows happening during pride month."

There will be a combined Dunedin Pride X Fringe Hub at the Dunedin Community Gallery in Princes St from March 12 to 26.

"The hub is a space where we will be hosting events.

"It’s also a space that will just be open for those two weeks for people to drop by."

People would also be able to spend time making art.

"The last day that we are in the hub we are having an arts day, so it will be a big showcase of everything that we’ve made."

Artwork for Pride Month this year was created in collaboration with Jess Thompson Carr , known as Maori Mermaid.

"She has come back with this amazing image of the Otago Harbour and this full trans-inclusive rainbow colour palette."
