Community spirits were high as local food banks welcomed the delivery of cans and dry goods collected during the recent Emergency Services Christmas Food Bank Can Appeal.

More than 200 volunteers took to the streets across two nights to collect cans and dry goods for local foodbanks in the annual event.

Co-ordinator and senior firefighter Aimee Taylor said Dunedin’s grand total was 1000 banana boxes of food and $366 cash, a third more than last year.

"It was awesome and Mosgiel’s was just as successful ... With demand soaring, I know our foodbanks were hanging out for this to restock their shelves."

Salvation Army Dunedin community ministries manager Fiona Arnold said the food it received from the can appeal would make a significant difference.

"We want to say a big thank-you to everyone who donated, and we wish you a blessed Christmas."

Over the past 12 months, the cost of a basic food parcel had risen from $120 to $135 — a 12.5% increase. Demand for assistance was also rising exponentially, she said.

The Salvation Army received a huge variety of food, which included everything from basic staples to chocolate, treats and gifts for children.

St Vincent de Paul centre and pastoral co-ordinator Sarah Strang said the community came through for the organisation’s foodbank.

"We received probably a third more than last year, and excellent quality."

She conveyed the organisation’s heartfelt gratitude and blessings to the people who donated, organiser Aimee Taylor and all the volunteers who made it happen.

Presbyterian Support Otago communications manager Alena Lynch said it was hugely grateful to the Dunedin community for their generosity.

"We continue to help people who are struggling to put food on the table and Christmas is another added expense for families and individuals ... Thank you Dunedin."

Mosgiel Food Bank co-ordinator Michelle Kerr said the can appeal was "amazing" and exceeded expectations.
