Dance, drumming and a dragon helped usher in the Year of the Rabbit as about 5000 people gathered throughout the afternoon and evening on Saturday for celebrations at Lan Yuan Dunedin Chinese Garden for Chinese New Year.

Alongside Chinese cultural performances — including from the Chinese Cultural and Arts Association Dunedin and the Dunedin Senior Chinese Association — representatives from other cultures performed.

Among them were the Dunedin City Council Waiata Group, Natyaloka School of Indian Dance and Japanese drumming ensemble O-Taiko.

People enjoyed a range of food stalls on site and in the evening a fireworks display provided a treat for many to enjoy across the city.

Dunedin Chinese Gardens Trust chairman and master of ceremonies Malcolm Wong said the night was a celebration of the diverse cultures in Dunedin.
