Sport Otago last year took on the job of conducting a needs assessment and feasibility study that could lead to a new multimillion-dollar indoor sports facility for the Waitaki district.
Sport Otago chief executive John Brimble said yesterday the regional sports organisation was on track to present the council with a draft report in June and had shortened the list of potential sites for the facility.
The possible locations included "two or three [viable sites] in the same location".
"It’s been a process of elimination, basically," Brimble said.
"We have looked at every site and then, having gauged the requirements of the sporting community, we’ve estimated what size the complex needs to be and then superimposed what a recreation centre of that size would need to be on each of those sites."
Options would be ranked, but in some cases, sites were ruled out immediately, especially given that parking for up to 200 cars might be required, he said.
Sport Otago had engaged an architect and a a quantity surveyor to develop costings based on the concept drawings produced by the architect.
Brimble was assessing facilities in the Waitaki Valley this week.
The quality of the open spaces was "still of a reasonably good quality". In general, users were satisfied with the extent and number of outdoor fields, though amenities such as changing rooms and toilets in some cases might require work.
The organisation had surveyed existing facilities, including the Waitaki Community Recreation Centre, and users — and "the general feeling coming from the sports [groups] is that a new recreation centre is required".
Sport Otago would also canvas "the general views of the public".
A draft report would be prepared for a Waitaki District Council workshop on June 7 and a revised report was expected to be completed by July 7 for the council on August 2.
