Police officers detain a man shortly after he allegedly assaulted a female in Dunedin yesterday.

A police spokesman said officers responded to a report of a man assaulting a female in St David St, North Dunedin, about 12.50pm.

The male left in a vehicle, which was stopped by police shortly afterwards in Cumberland St, near Castle St, the spokesman said.

The man was detained and issued with a police safety order, he said.

A witness said three police cars and six officers descended on the suspect opposite the Dunedin Central Fire Station.
