Scaffolding has been erected around part of Woolworths Dunedin South to protect the building from a potential collapse of the nearby Dunedin Gasworks Museum’s 25m-high brick chimney.

Visible cracks in the chimney have been present for at least a decade, but last month’s 6.8-magnitude earthquake caused new cracks and aggravated the existing ones, the Dunedin City Council said earlier this month.

Neighbouring Woolworths Dunedin South was told to manage the risks that a potential collapse could have, and public access to the museum has
been prohibited.

A Woolworths New Zealand spokesperson said work had been completed to protect the roof as specified by the council.

They were unable to say what work had been done.

"We are now waiting for the council to inspect the completed work and remove the Building Notice."

Woolworths expected that to happen yesterday, the spokesperson said.

The council was unable to answer any questions about the matter yesterday.

When the ODT visited the site yesterday, scaffolding was in place and an aisle inside the store was still cordoned off.
