Jordan Donaldson is starting off her international sporting career at a young age.

The St Leonards 9-year-old is off to Adelaide this weekend to compete in the World BMX championships.

She will be racing in the 9 years girls category, one of 25 riders from around the world competing in that age group.

Jordan has some fine form to take into the championships.

She won the North Island champs in Gisborne in October last year then won the South Island champs in Alexandra at the start of this year.

The St Leonards School year 4 pupil looked a sure bet to win the nationals but had to settle for third after a spill in the final race.

The competition will be hot in Australia and Jordan will have to be on her game.

She will be in three heats and will need to finish in the top four to make it through to the semifinals.

From there, a top-four finish is needed to secure a place in the one-race final.

Jordan, who is coached by Ted Lucas, of Invercargill, started the sport when her family lived in Invercargill two years ago.

There was a track nearby, and Jordan's father, Greg Donaldson, said the family paid a visit and his daughter took to the sport like a duck to water.

Unfortunately, Dunedin's wet winter has not helped in her training for the world championships.

The track at Forrester Park had been waterlogged for much of the past couple of months, so she has had to train on other tracks around Dunedin.

Dunedin rider Daniel McElhinney is also competing in the championships, in the 24-29 age group.
