With the ANZ Premiership trophy in the cabinet, Jeff Cheshire looks back at some stand-out moments from the Southern Steel’s unbeaten season.

Best performance

80-44 win over Central Pulse

This  shaped as a big game. The Steel was coming off a 10-day break and was facing a strong Pulse side on its own floor. But, on this night, everything fell into place.

The defence was suffocating, the attack relentless, as the Steel shot out to a 23-10 lead.

It carried on in the same manner for an emphatic win.

After the game, coach Reinga Bloxham, always one looking at ways to get better, rated the effort a 9.2  out of 10.

Imagine how well this team would have played had it delivered a 10.

Most memorable performance

51-46 win over Mainland Tactix

Not the most emphatic win, but almost certainly the most meaningful.

Two days after a team van accident and missing four starters, a young team rallied late and pulled off a remarkable win.

It held the Tactix to just five fourth-quarter goals, as it rode a wave of momentum to the end  after trailing for most of the game.

Worst performance

61-55 win over Mainland Tactix

It is hard to be too picky after an unbeaten season, but this one was pretty scratchy. In the Steel’s first Dunedin game of the season, it tried out several different combinations against the then-winless Tactix.

They did not go particularly well, either. The Tactix held a lead in the fourth quarter, before the Steel returned its regular starters and got back in front with nine minutes to go.

Most valuable player

Jhaniele Fowler-Reid

Take nothing away from anyone else, but it is hard to go past Jhaniele Fowler-Reid’s dominance.

The 1.98m goal shoot was near unstoppable all season, scoring 790 goals.

No-one could stop her getting position close to the goal and when they did mark her closely, she was able to pull in feeds from anywhere and everywhere.

When she did miss, she  usually got the ball back to finish on the second chance.

That allowed the Steel to essentially score when it wanted to, racking up some massive scores.

Honourable mentions go to Jane Watson and Gina Crampton, both of who kicked on from last year and had stand-out seasons.

Best individual performance

Jhaniele Fowler-Reid v Mainland Tactix, 90-41 win

Not to make this all about one player, but the Jamaican scored 70 goals in this game.

Just process that.

Sure, it was against the Tactix, but 70 goals is 70 goals and one of the more impressive numbers in an impressive season.
