Netball: Record win sets Steel up for tilt at Fever

The Steel rewrote the record books with a thumping 22-goal win over the Central Pulse in Wellington on Saturday.

Now the Southerners have another milestone in their cross hairs - to be the first New Zealand franchise to win on Australian soil.

The Steel's 66-44 demolition of the Pulse was its highest score and biggest winning margin since the ANZ Championship's inception last year.

The Steel's previous highest score was 61, which it scored against the Mystics in Auckland this season, and its previous biggest winning margin (58-43) was posted against the West Coast Fever in Dunedin last year.

The Fever had spent the best part of a day travelling from Perth to Dunedin and it showed on court, with the Steel too sharp all round for the lethargic Australians.

A year later it is the Steel's turn to make the exhausting trip.

But as far as assistant coach Margaret Foster is concerned, a plane ride is no excuse for a poor performance.

"It's only a plane ride and you don't want to make too much of it," she said.

"It is what professional athletes have to do. But I guess we have to make sure we are as well prepared as we can be leading into the trip."

The Steel will spend most of Saturday in the air before touching down in Perth that evening.

The game is not until Monday so Foster is confident her side will recover from the flight and be ready for the Fever.

"As long as we're well prepared and re-hydrated, we will be fine."

No New Zealand franchise has managed a win in Australia yet but that had to change eventually, she said.

"The secret to winning in Australia is playing there more and adapting to their style of play and umpiring."

The Steel's comfortable win may have been costly.

Shooter Donna Wilkins hobbled off during the last quarter and quickly iced her left ankle.

"She's a bit of a warrior is our Donna and I don't think it is an injury which will keep her on the sideline."

Steel captain Adine Wilson watched the game from the bench.

The wing attack has been struggling with a calf strain but could have played if required.

However, the team decided to rest its star player.

"We really wanted to make sure she is right for the rest of the campaign," Foster said.

The Pulse had the better of the opening quarter, taking a 13-11 lead into the break.

But the Steel soon seized control of the match, outscoring its opponent 21-8 in a second quarter blow out and stretching its lead by nine goals in the third period.

The final quarter was more even with the Steel taking the honours 14-12.

Foster was pleased with the comprehensive win and praised her side for a strong second and third quarter which set up the victory.

Steel shooter Daneka Wipiiti had a strong game with 31 goals from 34 attempts.

Midcourter Liana Barrett-Chase made some devastating passes and swooped on the scraps, and Katrina Grant was solid on defence.

For the Pulse, Camilla Lees provided glimpses of her talent and Paula Griffin shot well.

Steel 66 (Daneka Wipiiti 31 from 34, Donna Wilkins 26/30, Julianna Naoupu 9/12), Central Pulse 44 (Paula Griffin 28/35, Jamilah Gupwell 4/9, Te Amo Amaru-Tibble 12/12).

Quarter 11-13, half-time 32-21, third quarter 52-32.
