The Steel has added another three players to its roster, bringing its squad up to nine.

New Zealand under-21 trio Storm Purvis, Te Paea Selby-Rickit and Phoenix Karaka are the latest to re-sign for another stint.

Jamaican star shooter Jhaniele Fowler previously signed a two-year deal and Jodi Brown, Wendy Frew, Phillipa Finch, Shannon Francois and Rachel Rasmussen have also been locked in for the 2014 campaign.

The franchise has decided there is no room under the salary cap for new Silver Fern Courtney Tairi.

The wing attack will likely pop up at the Magic next season.

Sulu Tone-Fitzpatrick's future with the Steel is unclear.

She was a preferred starter alongside Rasmussen, but the franchise has made no secret of its desire to bolster its defensive stocks.

With Purvis, Karaka and Rasmussen already on the books, Tone-Fitzpatrick would be surplus to requirement if the Steel can lure another defender south.

Chief executive Sue Clarke has previously indicated the franchise would probably look to sign 12 players rather than the maximum squad of 14.

That could spell bad news for development players Kate Shearer and New Zealand under-21 midcourter Stacey Peeters.

Purvis, who will captain the New Zealand under-21 team at the world youth championships in Scotland next week, said she was relieved her immediate future in the ANZ Championship was secure.

''To sign with the Steel and get that out of the way before heading across to Scotland for the worlds was a big priority for me,'' the 20-year-old said.

''And I'm really excited to be part of that team again. We made a lot of growth this year and next year is going to be a big year for us.

''I can't believe it will be my third season. It still feels relatively new to me.''

The New Zealand under-21 team leaves for Scotland from Auckland tomorrow and opens its campaign against Bermuda early Friday morning New Zealand time.

New Zealand is in pool B with Trinidad & Tobago, Northern Ireland and Malta as well as Bermuda.

Trinidad & Tobago shapes as the biggest threat in pool play but Australia looms large.

Australia beat New Zealand in the final in the Cook Islands four years ago and Purvis believes it will be formidable once again.

''They have been training hard together all year - based at the AIS as a team. They'll have connections that we would not have had time to work on.

"But we've had a really great couple of weeks in camp up in Auckland and I think it will be a good competition for us.''

The under-21 team had warm-up games against the Silver Ferns which Storm described as ''fantastic'' preparation.

''To have that before heading over was invaluable.''

Purvis will have plenty of company in Scotland with Steel players Selby-Rickit, Karaka and Peeters also in the squad. And Steel coach Janine Southby is the New Zealand under-21 coach. Being named captain was a thrill for Purvis.

''I feel very proud to be representing my country and to captain this team will be an easy job because all the girls are really great and the management is awesome. I can't wait to get over there.''

Storm Purvis is not the captain of the Otago national championship team as reported yesterday.

Shannon Francois is the captain.
