New Zealand Open men's manager Ange Shand, of Invercargill, said there were six teams competing in the A grade section of the tournament.
Canterbury was the favourite to take home the title again and will face Otago in one semifinal today.
Rotorua will meet Auckland in the day's other semifinal.
In the B grade, there had been a couple of late withdrawals, meaning the Otago Mixed and Taupo Mixed teams were entered into the B Grade pool play, going up against Southland, Wanganui, Otago Retro, Stormers (north of Auckland), Wellington B and Wakatipu.
Today's mixed grade final would be between Otago Mixed and Taupo Mixed, Shand said.
The nationals began on Thursday night in Queenstown and will end today.
Tomorrow, selectors would be naming the 12 men in the New Zealand Under-23 side and the New Zealand Open side, with the male members of the New Zealand mixed team also to be announced.
Shand said those selected in the New Zealand Open team would be heading to the Cook Islands in October for the World Cup, and as training would be playing the Silver Ferns.
Shand said men's netball was quickly gaining popularity, with Southland Boys High School in Invercargill now accepting the sport into its curriculum, which was helping with the strength of the New Zealand sides.
"It's a good mental game. We've found that a lot of guys have come into it by starting social netball and then they'll say 'Hey, this is a really good sport' and go from there.
"[Men's netball] is really big in the Pacific. I think that netball in general is very popular in our part of the world."
The play-off games in the New Zealand men's championships begin at 8am today, with the action on the courts in the Queenstown Events Centre expected to conclude at 5pm.
