Five Steel players will join 19 other Silver Fern hopefuls at the national trials in Auckland early next month.

Incumbent Silver Fern Jodi Brown, national accelerant squad member Shannon Francois, midcouters Courtney Tairi and Phillipa Finch and experienced defender Rachel Rasmussen will fly the flag for the Steel.

The trials will be held in Auckland from August 5-8, culminating in the naming of the Silver Ferns and national accelerant squad on August 9.

Silver Ferns coach Waimarama Taumaunu believes competition for positions will be as strong as ever.

''Trials are the final opportunity for players to impress the national selectors and, with the 2014 Commonwealth Games just around the corner, we want to give players every opportunity to push for selection,'' she said in a press release.

Competition looks strongest in the midcourt, where former Silver Ferns Liana Leota and Joline Henry are returning from an absence at international level.

Laura Langman has a mortgage on the centre bib, which really leaves only one spot available. Finch has had a strong season for the Steel but Camilla Lees (Pulse) perhaps shapes as the favourite.

Maria Tutaia and Irene van Dyk look set to resume their long-standing combination in the attacking circle. Brown and Cathrine Latu are the only real back-up options. Ellen Halpenny (Magic) and Julianna Naoupu (Tactix) are the other shooters who have been asked to trial.

Naoupu and Mystics defender Jessica Moulds are under injury clouds and will need medical clearance to compete in the trials.

Casey Kopua, Leana de Bruin and Katrina Grant are the leading defenders in the country and will almost certainly retain their places in the Silver Ferns.

Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit (Pulse) and Rachel Rasmussen appear likely to go head-to-head for the remaining defensive slot.

The Silver Ferns open their season with a Constellation Cup game against Australia in Invercargill on September 15.
