Netball: Dunedin to host three Steel games

The Southern Steel will play three times in Dunedin during next year's ANZ Championship as the side looks to win more fans in the city.

It will be the first time the Steel has played three times in Dunedin, up from the usual two games.

The move has been driven by the need to attract more corporate support from Dunedin and the fact Stadium Southland will not be completed by the time the season is completed.

The games in Dunedin will pit the Steel against the West Coast Fever on April 21, the Northern Mystics on May 13 and the Central Pulse on May 28.

The Steel will begin its campaign with a match against the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic in Invercargill on April 2.

The other games in Invercargill are against defending champions Queensland Firebirds on May 20, the Canterbury Tactix on June 18, and the final round robin clash, against the Melbourne Vixens, on June 30. The games in Invercargill will be played at the Southland Velodrome, as the stadium is not due to be completed until the end of August.

Steel chief executive Julie Paterson said the franchise was delighted with the draw.

"To both open and close the round robin stage of the competition at one of our home venues with our loyal fans in full voice is fantastic,"she said.

"We have some great opponents heading south to play the Steel, including the defending champion Queensland Firebirds, so there will be plenty for fans and our family of sponsors to get excited about."

The sides play against teams from the same country twice and then the other country just once in what has become a sore point for some as Australians teams tend to have more depth.

The venue for the away match for the Steel against the Magic on June 4 has yet to be decided.

The Magic has two new host venues, in Hamilton and Tauranga.

The ANZ Championship will begin with the Adelaide Thunderbirds hosting the New South Wales Swifts on March 31.

The season this year started in February, due to the competition having to be finished by July when the World Championships were staged in Singapore.

Next year, the competition reverts to its standard 17-week format with no double-header games.

Games will be played on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays.

There are two complete transtasman rounds, and the grand final is set for the weekend of July 21-22.

The Steel has incurred some major player losses since last season. Key defender Leana de Bruin has left, along with coach Robyn Broughton and shooters Paula Griffin and Daneka Wipiiti.

The side has eight players signed and needs to secure another four players to complete its playing roster.
