The Silver Ferns play Australia in Invercargill on Sunday in the first of five games during the next month.
The first two matches are in New Zealand and the Constellation Cup will be competed for in the final three games, which are being staged in Australia.
Preparation begins in Invercargill today and Taumaunu is of the firm opinion Australia will target the Silver Ferns' midcourt as a potential weak link.
''I think an opposition coach would certainly do that,'' she said.
The Silver Ferns boast an experienced line-up featuring six players who have made 50 or more international appearances.
Australia does not have the same breadth of experience as New Zealand, with Kimberlee Green (49) and Bianca Chatfield (49) the most capped players in the Diamonds' ranks.
But while there is a clear advantage to New Zealand on that score, whoever wears the wing attack bib will be a baby in international terms.
The Silver Ferns' midcourt options have been reduced with the unavailability of Liana Leota and injuries to Millie Lees and Kayla Cullen.
Leota and Lees would have vied for the wing attack bib, while Cullen would have been an option at wing defence or centre.
Their absence means Anna Thompson and Courtney Tairi will go head-to-head for a start at wing attack.
''Yes, that [wing attack] bib is up for grabs,'' Taumaunu said.
''We've kept a close eye on the performances of both those players. They bring different strengths to the court but I'm certainly relaxed that either one of them could go on.
''I guess we are looking forward to being challenged in that area and seeing how successful our preparation work has been.''
If Tairi gets the nod, she will be making her international debut, while Thompson has made nine appearances since her debut in 2009.
''It is a very important position. When you've only got seven people on the court, you can't afford to have any passengers. Those two players have been working hard on building connections and combinations with the players around them.
"We'll be supporting both of them to step up, just as Millie did last year.''
Australia's starting midcourt trio is likely to be Madison Browne, Kimberlee Green and Renae Hallinan.
The Diamonds also have exciting 20-year-old Kimberley Ravailion pushing hard for a starting spot.
Matching Australia's tempo or finding a way to control the pace of the game will be a key for the home side.
The Silver Ferns will play warm-up games against Southland and Otago national championship sides in the next few days and some extra players are coming into the camp to assist with training drills.
Former Australian goal shoot Vicki Wilson has already made an impact in her new role as Silver Ferns assistant coach. She has helped introduce some new drills.
''When you've been doing things for a long time, as some of these players have, it is great to try something new to reinvigorate netball practice.''
