The former captain has joined the side’s coaching team for the ANZ Premiership season.
She will be an assistant to fourth-year head coach Reinga Bloxham, while Lauren Piebenga also returns as an assistant.
Frew will be based in Invercargill and assist at training there, while Piebenga will provide support in Dunedin.
A gritty wing defence who led the team to back-to-back titles before retiring in 2018, Frew is excited to be back.
"It’s great to be back with the girls. It feels like I never left with the friendships I still have," she said.
"It’s a great opportunity to develop in the new environment."
Bloxham added she was pleased to have the duo at her side.
“It’s really exciting to have Lauren back on board again," she said.
"She’s been with me at Steel the whole time so her knowledge is amazing and she goes from strength-to-strength in her coaching ability.
“Wendy coming on as an assistant down in Invercargill adds extra strength as she has plenty of game knowledge and experience.
"She has huge respect from the players — when she speaks they stop and listen."
