Courtney Elliott was a late arrival to the Southern Steel, but she has been quick to make an impression.

The 19-year-old defender has gone from strength to strength since joining the team as Malysha Kelly's injury replacement just days before the start of the season.

Several strong performances off the bench helped her work her way into the starting line-up last Sunday against the Northern Stars. She made the most of her opportunity, coming up with a big intercept in the final minute to secure a 63-61 win.

As the side prepares to play the Stars again on the season's second Super Sunday, in Christchurch, it will be hoping for more of the same.

It will take the court again on Monday, playing the Mainland Tactix in its second double-header of the season.

Elliott said she was happy with how things were going.

''It's going good; definitely a lot more to learn and gain from it,'' she said.

''But I'm definitely loving the experience and the different level of netball.''

Originally from Hamilton, Elliott was called into the squad after catching coach Reinga Bloxham's eye at the premiership's pre-season tournament.

She had been playing for the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic, a training partner from its Beko League team.

It was a big step up, the 2016 New Zealand secondary schools player of the year having been easing back into netball over the past year after recovering from an Achilles injury.

Elliott has taken that big step up in her stride.

''It was pretty much just do what you know.

''The girls were really good; they kept talking to me and always having my back.''

She said the professional environment was the biggest change to what she had been involved with in the past.

It is not just netball Elliott has a talent in - she has dabbled in kick boxing.

But for now, netball is her focus, notably the two games over the coming two days.

The Steel plays the first game tomorrow, which will be followed by the Tactix v Magic and the Central Pulse v Northern Mystics in the late game.

Kendall McMinn and Kate Heffernan will join the Steel in the absence of Dani Gray, who has been ruled out for the season with a knee injury.

Taneisha Fifita will also join the team on Monday night.
