Brown: expect Silver Ferns to play in final

The Silver Ferns will make the final. From there anything could happen.

There was a time when that was nothing special to say.

Things have changed, though, and that World Cup prediction from former shooter Jodi Brown may surprise a few.

A new coaching team has come in and some experience has returned since the disastrous Commonwealth Games campaign of 15 months ago.

Brown felt the team was looking good.

It had exceeded her expectations of where it would be.

Noeline Taurua had brought in the right people in the right places and moved forward well.

Likewise, the return of Casey Kopua and Laura Langman would be vital.

"Casey and Laura's experience is going to be huge," Brown said.

"Just walking the talk, backing it up.

"I think in the past couple of seasons the Silver Ferns have done a lot of talking and haven't necessarily been able to back it up on court.

"These two do. They have words and they live by those words.

"They've got the passion because they haven't won a world champs."

Brown felt last week's series had been great preparation.

She said the squad was well-selected and balanced nicely to have players covering multiple positions.

It was also key that players were being played in ways to maximise their abilities.

The shooting circle had impressed her.

She thought Ameliaranne Ekenasio stepped up and Maria Folau did a great job of highlighting her strengths.

Likewise, Langman was strong in the midcourt and while she said the defence could pick up more ball, they were capable of that.

It is the wing attack position which worries her.

"I just don't think at the moment either Shannon [Saunders] or Gina [Crampton] have really put their mark on it.

"We've seen glimpses of each one of them be really good.

"Then glimpses of some not so good patches.

"So [the key is] just having that consistency."

The key to victory was simple - look after the ball and make every turnover count on the scoreboard, she said.

"We know people like Casey and Jane [Watson] can get ball.

"But their ability to transition that ball through the court and make use of it is important.

"Netball's a basic game. You get 50% of the centre passes so, at the end, it should be a draw.

"So the key is going to be capitalising on every turnover ball they can."

The draw works well for the Silver Ferns.

Assuming no hitches, they should cruise through to the semifinals.

They face Australia in the preliminary stages, so avoid their rival in knockout play until the final.

England, Jamaica and South Africa all represent troublesome potential semifinal opponents.

In that sense Brown knew it would not be easy, although she is giving the Silver Ferns every chance.

"I think it's going to be the closest World Cup in history.

"Before you go into this World Cup you could say there could be four or five teams win this tournament on their day.

"I have confidence in the way the draw has favoured New Zealand that we will get through to the final.

"From there it's anyone's game, in terms of turning up on the day being able to do it."
