'Bit weird' for Elliott playing away against Magic at home

Courtney Elliott will be enjoying a few home comforts today.

There will be some familiar faces in the crowd, the arena will be well known to her and she will know her opposition a little better than most.

Despite all that, it is technically an away game for the Southern Steel defender.

The side plays the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic in her home town of Hamilton tonight.

It will be her second time playing at home since joining the Southern Steel a year ago.

She admitted it was ''a bit weird'', but she enjoyed the challenge.

''It's always cool playing at home,'' Elliott (20) said.

''There's always a few more faces I know in the crowd.

''It's definitely exciting and I'm looking forward to it really.''

Having been part of Waikato-Bay of Plenty's Beko League team, Elliott was brought south as a late injury replacement for import Malysha Kelly.

She thrived from the beginning, playing her way into a starting spot and being selected for the Silver Ferns development squad.

An ankle niggle bothered her early this season, but that is now fixed.

However, Abby Erwood has jumped back in front of her in the defensive pecking order.

That has left Elliott to try to add spark from the bench and take the opportunities she gets.

Despite that, she is viewing it in a positive light.

''It's definitely been different, but it's also been an opportunity to learn and grow.

''I guess it gives you a bit of motivation to work harder at training to potentially get more game time.

''But it's definitely awesome.

''It's still the same environment on the sideline with the girls, just being supportive.

''It's always good.''

She has also found how to best take advantage of the new role.

There was an unpredictability as to when she would be injected which is not there for a starter.

However, she now enters games armed with knowledge of what is happening and what she needs to do.

''I almost kind of like it, coming on afterwards.

''You're able to scope out what's happening on the court.

''Then I guess the team and the coaches kind of get a feel for what's going on and the patterns the other team are setting.

''So they're able to give you feedback I guess on ways to combat what they're doing on court.''

Tonight's game will be the first of three in the space of six days for the Steel.

After that, it has two games remaining before the playoffs.

Hunting down the unbeaten Central Pulse - which holds a 10-goal lead - is unlikely.

However, the Steel can secure a playoff spot with one more win.

If it does that tonight, it will also leave the Magic needing to win its three remaining games and rely on the Stars to lose its three to advance.
