Football: Unbeaten Roslyn secures trophy

Roslyn-Wakari remained unbeaten at Tahuna Park to win the Otago Football Referees Association Challenge Cup on Saturday.

The trophy was last played for in 1994, with Roslyn the last name engraved on it.

Coach Terry Boylan said the pre-season tournament gave clubs a chance to show their strength in depth and give young fringe players a chance to play alongside senior players.

"We had a couple of injuries, such as Tom Connor and Dave Shaw, so they rested for the Southern Premier League's start on Saturday," Boylan said.

"The youngsters we fielded appreciated the chance to play against top sides, and high-energy games by our strikers Sean Brand and Tim Dalman set top standards for the whole squad."

After losing 3-1 to Green Island in its first game, defending SPL champion Caversham chose to default its place in the later stages of the competition.

Green Island, under new coach Warren Robinson, went on to challenge Technical in the other semifinal, but Mike Fridge's side had a comfortable 3-0 win.

For Technical, Ross McKenzie rarely wasted a ball, Blair Scoullar was relaxed in defence and striker Richard Smith opened the scoring with a trademark header.

Mosgiel balanced its youth policy with appearances by veterans Mike McGarry, Phil Kelly and keeper Pat Howell, but the youngsters in blue also showed their class against Varsity.

Regan Coldicott has pace to burn and demonstrated a high level of skill to score possibly the goal of the tournament, carving through University's defence and finishing clinically.

The students also showed they will be no pushovers under coach Alan Bain as Zac Rathbone and Alex Mason scored to force a draw with the Plainsmen.

Grants Braes coach Alan Laidler saw his side's form improve when Terry Saunders scored to beat Northern 1-0.

Braes also drew 1-1 with the fancied Technical side, albeit by an own goal.

Northern did not gain the results that its driving play should have, but coaches David Martin-Chambers and John Wilkinson are confident that, on the day, their side will perform well in SPL football.
