Technical striker Burgess once scored five goals in a National League match but went one better this time to take his tally this season to an intimidating eight goals in two matches.
Possibly with tongue in cheek, Technical coach Mike Fridge said he had never seen Burgess miss so many chances.
"He could have bagged a few more," Fridge said. "But he did show the predator's instinct that all good strikers have to have."
Roslyn-Wakari had to dig deep to overhaul a two-goal deficit and beat Green Island 5-2, while Spirit FC scraped in with a 1-0 win over Grants Braes.
The only other unbeaten side, Mosgiel, posted serious intentions at Memorial Park to beat defending FPL champion Caversham 2-1.
At Sunnyvale, Dan Rutters gave Green Island a dream start with two good goals to set Roslyn a tough target.
However, a powerful header by defender Tim Witten-Saga opened Roslyn's account, and Harley Rodecka thundered in a spectacular equaliser.
In the second half, Roslyn emerged superior against a battling Island side that ran out of legs and, in a devastating final eight minutes, Tom Connor, Terry O'Donnell and James Vaughan beat Island keeper Callum Flaws.
At Memorial Park, Robbie Deeley gave Caversham an early lead, and coach Steve Fleming's side played composed football.
Yet Mosgiel, with Mike McGarry unusually at left fullback, was always dangerous and just on half-time Shayne Danielson equalised.
Then, as he has done throughout his lengthy career, 40-plus father-of-five Phil Kelly showed vintage skills to grab the winner and give Mosgiel a famous victory.
Two away goals by Northern's Seamus Gray and Liam Dungey were not enough as Queenstown replied with three goals by Chris Chick, Juan Cardona and Lenny Weishut to grab fifth slot in the FPL.
Grants Braes went close to causing an upset against Spirit FC in its lair in Invercargill, with Robbie Mitchell looking the most accomplished player on the park.
It took a solo effort by Carl Henderson to clinch an important win for player-coach Barry Gardiner's home side.
